Many people are apprehensive about the idea of taking part in hypnotherapy. There are a number of reasons for this – for example, it’s somewhat natural to be nervous about new experiences. But there is also the various depictions of hypnosis in the media which people have grown up with, in which the techniques are shown as a method of controlling others!
Nothing could be further from the truth, as in fact, when you undergo hypnosis you will actually be able seize control of your own behaviour, abilities and your place in the world, much better than you could before.
If you’ve never taken part in hypnotherapy before, you are probably wondering what to expect. Knowing a little something in advance of your first appointment might give you that little extra bit of courage needed to make the changes you feel you need to make in your life.
There isn’t really a single answer to the question of what you will experience. The reason for this is that your therapy will be tailored to your specific needs, and dependent on not just what changes you would like to make in your life, but how you are most likely to respond to different forms of treatment.
At the outset of your therapy, we will discuss your aims in order to decide how best to proceed. Just as a doctor would not be able to treat a patient whose condition he didn’t understand, any attempts at hypnotherapy are ineffective without a good mutual understanding of why you’re there.
Unlike some other forms of therapy, we will not dwell on your past or anything private to you. The focus will be on the person you will become in future.
It’s important to understand that therapy is not something done to you, but rather is a journey that you take and that your therapist merely guides you through. Think of it as being given the tools to help yourself.
At the beginning of your session, the therapist will encourage you to enter a state of relaxation. While you are aware of everything that is going on, and will remember the session clearly later, you will also lose some inhibitions and be more susceptible to suggestions made during this short time.
The suggestions will be along the lines that you have agreed on beforehand and will depend on your own needs and expectations. You will also go away afterwards with techniques for self-hypnosis – a powerful tool that you can use on your own to strengthen your new convictions.
Although your initial sessions at our Swansea hypnotherapy clinic will last around 90 minutes, they will get shorter as you progress and you become more comfortable with entering a trance state. You should need no more than ten sessions in all – many patients find that they are satisfied enough to terminate therapy after five or fewer.
The simplest answer to what to expect from your hypnotherapy session however, is simply that you can expect to find relief from whatever troubles you, be it a lack of confidence, an addiction, physical pain or almost anything else that stems from the psyche.
